Mahler’s Third Symphony is his hymn to the natural world and his longest work. It combines a hitherto unheard of six movements. They range from sounds depicting huge and grand vistas to the angelic sound of women’s and children’s voices. From the loudest to the softest, from the most brash to the smoothest of sounds, almost everything is here in this piece which is larger than life – not unlike Mahler himself!
